Why do we recommend regular hygiene appointments?

Looking after your teeth and gums is an important part of maintaining a healthy smile. While brushing and cleaning between your teeth at home is essential, there are areas that can be difficult to reach and clean effectively.

Regular hygiene appointments allow our hygienists to professionally clean your teeth, remove plaque and calculus (tartar), and help you maintain healthy gums.

Your hygienist will also take the time to understand your individual needs and provide advice and guidance to help you look after your teeth and gums between appointments.

The frequency of your hygiene appointments will depend on your individual needs. Your hygienist will recommend a suitable interval based on your oral health, lifestyle and any existing dental concerns.

We believe these are just some of the benefits of regular hygiene care

Regular professional hygiene care can help to:

  • Remove plaque and calculus that cannot be removed effectively through brushing alone.
  • Maintain healthy gums and reduce the risk of gum disease.
  • Help prevent gum inflammation and bleeding.
  • Remove surface staining and help your teeth feel cleaner and smoother.
  • Support good oral hygiene at home.
  • Identify areas where you may benefit from additional advice or support.
  • Help identify any soft tissue concerns early.
  • Help you maintain your natural teeth and overall oral health.

For some patients, particularly those who have experienced gum disease, regular hygiene appointments are an important part of ongoing periodontal care.

Research has identified associations between gum health and wider general health, which is another reason why maintaining healthy gums is important.

How do we clean your teeth?

Everyone's teeth and gums are different, so your hygienist will choose the most appropriate treatment for you.

Ultrasonic and hand instrumentation

Your hygienist may use ultrasonic scaling, hand instruments, or a combination of both, depending on your individual needs. Ultrasonic scaling uses gentle vibrations and water to efficiently remove plaque and calculus, including deposits from areas that can be more difficult to reach.

Hand instruments allow your hygienist to work at a controlled pace and can be particularly useful for sensitive areas or where a more targeted approach is appropriate. Both techniques are well-established, evidence-based approaches for effective plaque and calculus removal, with research supporting the use of ultrasonic scaling as an effective method for professional dental cleaning.

Air polishing

Air polishing uses a combination of air, water and a fine powder to gently remove surface staining and deposits from the teeth.

It can leave your teeth feeling exceptionally clean and smooth and is particularly useful for removing staining caused by things such as tea, coffee or other lifestyle factors.

Feel free to ask your hygienist if this may benefit you at your appointment.

What happens during a hygiene appointment?

We want your hygiene appointment to be comfortable, relaxed and tailored to you.

1. Check-in

When you arrive at the practice, our reception team will welcome you and check you in for your appointment.

2. Your hygienist will collect you

Your hygienist will come through to the waiting area to greet you and take you into the surgery.

3. Discussion and assessment

Before starting treatment, your hygienist will talk to you about your oral health, daily routines and ask whether you have noticed any changes or concerns.

They will assess your teeth and gums and discuss any areas that may require particular attention.

4. Your hygiene treatment

Your hygienist will then carry out the appropriate cleaning for you.

Depending on your needs, this may include hand instrumentation, ultrasonic scaling, air polishing or a combination of techniques. A hygiene appointment is typically 30 minutes unless the hygienist has recommended otherwise.

We always aim to make your appointment as comfortable as possible and will adapt the treatment where necessary.

5. Oral hygiene advice

Your hygienist will discuss your home-care routine and may recommend techniques, products or tools to help you clean your teeth and gums more effectively. Remember, the more you can do at home makes for better oral health between each appointment.

This advice is personalised to you rather than being a one-size-fits-all approach.

6. Aftercare

Once your treatment is complete, your hygienist will explain anything you may notice following your appointment and provide any relevant aftercare advice.

You will also be advised when your next hygiene appointment is recommended, based on your individual oral health needs.

With regular appointments, the hygienist can take accurate measurements to help assess any areas that are improving or may need extra focus.

Your comfort matters

We understand that some patients may feel nervous about dental treatment or may have sensitive teeth and gums.

Our aim is to provide effective hygiene care while making sure you feel comfortable, informed and looked after throughout your visit.
